As a second-generation Central Oregonian, Thomas Manning has a special interest in local history. He relishes reading books about Central and Eastern Oregon, particularly those that recount the earliest contact with the native people. Though Thomas remains happily settled at home, his three grown children with wife Barbara are currently blazing their own trails in Portland, Wisconsin and New Jersey.

When he's not catching up on his reading, you're likely to find Thomas hiking. He also finds satisfaction working his five acres of pasture — changing sprinklers, fixing fences, doing odd jobs and tending steers in the summertime. While he "keeps threatening to start a garden," he wryly notes that his efforts have been mostly limited to tomato plants in tubs on the deck.
